Actually, it was because Scott Rudin insisted that if they did either the title number or 'Before the Parade Passes By,' they would have to be broadcast live from the Shubert because he didn't want to restage them for the different space. He offered to host a Tony viewing party at the Shubert before and after a live performance, with all the proceeds going to BCEFA, but the Tony producers turned him down because they didn't want to set a precedent. What a pity! Could you imagine, I mean could you imagine what that performance might have been? Ah, well.
