I had nearly the same exact reaction as yours after seeing the show on Wednesday night. I had high expectations for the theatre (which was a principal reason for buying a ticket) and lowered expectations for the performance. Both were exceeded: The Palace is gorgeous, and Ben Platt was truly engaging. I did not know most of his original songs, but he is a very good pop song writer. (I love "All American Queen.")

I'm disappointed that I didn't get to see Kelli O'Hara. The guest performer in my show was Tori Kelly, whom I didn't know. As he was introducing her, he said that the guests are friends or people he's worked with or admired, and he said he's followed her career for years. He added, and she sings "divinely." (I was about to jump out of my seat thinking he was going to bring out Bette Midler, whom he worked with in The Politician). They performed a Rihanna song, which was done quite well, but I don't know from Rihanna either!

It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, and since tickets are comparatively affordable, I'd recommend it to people on the fence.
