Tony winner Kelli O’Hara joined Ben Platt on stage tonight at the magnificent Palace Theatre and together they sang Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” It was one of many highlights of an entertaining 100 minute showcase of Platt’s considerable charms and talents.

The polished evening features two backup singers, a seven member band, and brilliant lighting effects. Platt, who has been smartly directed by Michael Arden, delivers a well-paced concert of his own original music and several well-known songs. Between numbers, Platt tells the story of his life, his ambitions, and regrets. He’s a charismatic performer who takes and holds the stage.

I was surprised to see all his dance moves, which were fun to watch. If I were to nitpick, I would note he delivers some of his patter too quickly.

Despite being on stage for all but a minute or two, and drinking from five bottles of water, the man never broke a sweat! I expected to but did not see any perspiration stains on his well-fitted light blue shirt.

Platt expresses sincere humility about appearing on the exalted Palace Theatre stage, and pays appropriate homage to Garland and Minnelli.

Orchestra and mezzanine appeared to be completely filled. The many young patrons seated within my view seemed familiar with Platt’s original songs, mouthing the lyrics and singing aloud a couple of times when encouraged by Platt.

After reading on this and another board many unflattering comments about Platt, I had low expectations. But, all in all, I thought it was a terrific production and had a wonderful time.
