Of course, you're right. But when you bring George C. Wolfe in, doesn't that kind of mean you'll get a fairly major spin on the material? I don't think that there are many people around who remember Gypsy Rose Lee or June Havoc and their fictional counterparts have overtaken them in the popular imagination. (Personally I have seen enough GYPSY's in my time to look forward to a new light on the story.)

I don't think racializing the girls and suggesting that there might be some internalized racism on Rose's part does great disservice to Laurents' work. I've always seen Louise as not just less talented, but emotionally stunted. This angle might offer a psychological rationale for why the poor kid is so beaten down at such a young age.
