I'm not especially discussing what "really" happened, whatever that was, after first Gypsy herself and then Laurents wrote their respective books.I'm not discussing "disservice to Laurents' work." I just mean that he wrote a very good musical book--one of the best actually--with very well drawn characters.

Why is "the poor kid...so beaten down at such a young age?" I think it's pretty obvious in every production of the show ever done. In addition to the endless, nonstop touring life that smothering and domineering Rose inflicts on both girls(and June runs away from), mother makes it abundantly clear to Louise that she is less talented and probably less attractive than her younger sister and thus worthy of being ignored and deprived of maternal--AND paternal--love.
