There is no credited Orchestrator in this production of a jazz-age musical. There’s a consultant listed but that’s it. More than half the songs sounded like they were just played by synth and drums, while a couple big-band numbers were well orchestrated to take advantage of, well, the big band. At least 10 musicians I think, though I don’t have my program handy now. The lack of orchestrations contributed to why the songs felt “the same.” I wonder if this will change as previews continue. There was a paper insert with a song list when I saw it so I imagine they are still finalizing the songs

I agree that this felt like a concept album of Florence Welch songs inspired by The Great Gatsby. I loved the dancing. I thought the performers were great across the board. The crucial “tell him you never loved him” scene didn’t feel completely earned yet- Daisy’s priorities and Tom’s abuse aren’t very clear

I felt about the same about this show as I did seeing Hadestown at NYTW. So, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a revised version of this show land on Broadway.
