The Who’s Tommy

I will admit: I didn’t want to go. I had never seen it and - color me embarrassed - don’t know the music at all. My partner wanted to see it, and it came up on TDF. I figured, What the hell?”

Interestingly, he liked it less than he expected to, and I liked it more than I thought I would.

It’s not an ideal production. It’s LOUD. Quite loud. And Des Macanuff seems to be recycling some directorial ideas from his last production of Jesus Christ Superstar and Summer. Notably odd: The pinball machine looks like a drafting table. The set, as a whole, is very bare bones - mostly a black box space with a lot of projections. I didn’t care for some of the busy choreography with backflips, etc - that didn't feel necessary.

But…I found the score to be very impressive, and I can’t believe I’ve never heard this music before. Also, there were some really fine performances, especially Ali Louis Bourzgui as Tommy and the FIERCE Christina Sajous as the Acid Queen. I found myself thinking that Christina would make a fabulous Aurora if Kiss of the Spiderwoman were to be revived.

As for the show itself, I had no idea the story was so dark and disturbing. The abuse young Tommy suffered is horrific. The sequelae of his trauma resolves a bit too easily and quickly to be believable.

Overall, I was thoroughly engaged thanks to the score and the performances. Glad I finally saw it, but would like to see another director’s interpretation. Sorry I missed the last revival.
