Agree totally about great Overtures really setting the tone for the show -- especially when the first music heard really can set the tone and even establish the Theme of the show. For example:
GYPSY -- the first music heard is the "I Had a Dream" motif. Well that clearly sets up the tone and theme of the show from the gig.
OKLAHOMA! -- the first music heard is "The Farmer and the Cowman" - which clearly sets up the theme of the changing community - the show is all about "community".
SOUTH PACIFIC - the first music is that wonderful interval of "Bali Ha'i" - the sound of that music transports the audience in to the exotic, mystical but dangerous world of the South Seas.
