This would be an especially terrific time to recognize Julie Andrews' theatrical legacy and legend. 2024 marks the 70th anniversary of her Broadway debut in ''The Boyfriend'' (1954). Yes, I've heard the argument that her Broadway resume of 4 shows is too spare to count as a lifetime achievement, but I heartily disagree. It's about who she is and what she represents. Andrews created the iconic roles of Eliza in ''My Fair Lady'' and Guinevere in ''Camelot.'' Is there anyone who doesn't associate Andrews, who starred in TV's ''Cinderella'' and Hollywood's ''Mary Poppins'' and ''The Sound of Music,'' with musicals?

And unlike those who leave for the bright lights of L.A., never to step foot on a New York stage again, she returned 4 decades later after her Broadway debut. She did Sondheim's ''Putting It Together'' in 1993. And if she hadn't valiantly spoke up for her ''egregiously overlooked'' cast and creative team of ''Victor/Victoria,'' Andrews surely would've won that 1996 Tony for Best Actress in a Musical, to go along with her Outer Critics and Drama Desk prizes.

Andrews has won an Oscar, an Emmy and a Grammy. She's been Kennedy Center honored and named a Dame. Plus, she has collected Lifetime Achievement Awards from the American Film Institute, BAFTA, the Screen Actors Guild and the Grammys. At 88, she is one of last living links & leading ladies from the golden age of musicals, so it's ironic that she has yet to be celebrated in the one arena where she began her long, illustrious career in America: Broadway.

To the Tony Awards: Don't ''just you wait'' any longer. In other words, ''Move your bloomin' arse!''

Please salute Julie Andrews while she can still attend and enjoy the ceremony. Now, ''wouldn't that be loverly''?
