She's beloved for the most part, and not only has she been in several famous Broadway musicals, but also the tv musical "Cinderella" was written for her (which resulted in a Broadway show years later) and starred in the film "Thoroughly Modern Millie", which again resulted in a Broadway hit musical. Oh, so did "Mary Poppins". These first two properties existed because of her and the 3rd was made famous by her, so even though her Broadway resume "only" includes "The Boy Friend", "My Fair Lady", "Camelot" and "Victor/Victoria", with an off-Broadway appearance in "Putting It Together", she certainly merits a Tony honor. Plus "The Sound of Music", another musical, was the top box-office holder for many years with her a major factor for its success, probably prompting many productions around the world. She has also championed and recorded Broadway music throughout her career. Btw, she was honored by the theater community in the 1950s by winning a Donaldson Award for "The Boy Friend", which was the precursor of the Tonys, but discontinued; it was considered a pretty big thing back in the day. Check out the wikipedia listing for the Donaldsons -- some every interesting winners there, and some very strange idea of categories, though the Tonys have a long history of inconsistencies as well. But, yes, it would be loverly to honor her -- she's still a major name, and her two nanny musicals are perennials.
