Context: The Tony nominators fired the first shot at ''Victor/Victoria'' by citing it for only 1 nomination: Andrews for Best Actress. Someone on this board once posted that there reportedly was some collusion among the nominators to deny a Best Musical slot to ''Victor/Victoria'' and ''Big'' - the two big ''commercial'' shows based on hit movies. To bump them out of the Best Musical category, that meant the Tony nominators had to nominate two flop shows in their place: ''Swinging on a Star'' (96 performances) and ''Chronicle of a Death Foretold'' (37 performances). I saw all the Broadway musicals that season, and though taste is subjective, there was NO WAY ''Swinging on a Star'' or ''Chronicle'' were worthier of a Best Musical slot than ''V/V'' and ''Big.''

Granted, ''Victor/Victoria'' may not be a masterpiece for the ages, but it was an entertainment that, with Andrews' star power, delighted many audiences and ran 734 performances. (Willa Kim's costumes & Robin Wagner's sets also were award-worthy.) The Drama Desk gave it 3 nominations, and Andrews won for Actress and Rachel York won Featured Actress. Plus, Andrews won Best Actress from the Outer Critics, which also named it Best Broadway Musical.

It's against this backdrop that Andrews chose to stick up for her cast and creative team, which also was directed by her husband, Blake Edwards.

Finally, Andrews' history with the Tonys goes further. She's co-hosted the event three times: in 3 different decades: 1970, 1984 and 1991.

What's more, the year after the ''V/V'' snub, the Tonys invited Andrews back to mark her 730th and final performance in ''Victor/Victoria.''
