Funny Girl tour in San Francisco

Funny Girl national tour opened yesterday in San Francisco. Overall, an enjoyable production with an outstanding leading lady -- and she is worth the price of admission. Katerina McCrimmon as Fanny has a fabulous voice, not only belting those big numbers like "I'm the Greatest Star" or "Don't Rain on My Parade," but also adding a stunning dramatic vocal interpretation to "People", haunting crooning of "Who Are You Now," and torching belt in "Music That Makes Me Dance." She is outstanding in the second act dramatic scenes with Nick, as is Stephan Mark Lukas as Nick. Nick's songs have always seemed extraneous in the writing, and still do, and the add-on of "Temporary Arrangement" does not fit the score well in style or character. Melissa Manchester's timing seemed a bit off at the matinee yesterday, pushing punching lines and giving too broad a performance. Sound design is deafening at times and needs to adjust to the large Orpheum space. Sets look like they have traveled across and seem more bus and truck than Broadway. Izaia Montague Harrris is outstanding as Eddie Ryan with great tap numbers, strong acting from Walter Coppage as Flo Ziegfeld. Lots of energy in ensemble, but the ensemble numbers are poorly conceived and poorly staged and lack Ziegfeld aura. The ensemble dancing could come from any musical with great toothy smiles and generic dance steps, not period pieces. Some director's choices for comedy are off, way too broad, must be leftovers from Beanie, especially in "YouAre Woman" which was overdone and ineffective. That said, the show has a great Fanny Brioce at its core, and that is cause for celebration.
