I strongly disagree. The comic direction is written into the piece and inextricably tied to Funny Girl being a bio-musical of one of the early 20th century's greatest comediennes. Certainly, there are long sections of Funny Girl (note that first word of the title) where it becomes more of a musical drama than a musical comedy, and directing those passages for laughs would be a grave error. However, there are equally long sections of the musical where it's essential to embrace the humor in the writing and the comic genius of not only its subject, but its original star.
