Comedy rarely wins Oscars for acting. Plus, when Judy Holliday won for "Born Yesterday" over her esteemed competition (Bette Davis, Gloria Swanson, Anne Baxter and Eleanor Parker), there have been all sorts of remarks that she didn't deserve the award. I think it's actually one of the most consistently hilarious performances captured on film. Perhaps the film hasn't as much insider cachet as "Sunset Boulevard" or "All About Eve" but Billie Dawn is a classic character alongside Norma Desmond, Margo Channing and Eve Harrington.

Other comedic leading performances that won incude Diane Keaton in "Annie Hall", Richard Dreyfuss for "The Goodbye Girl", Lee Marvin for "Cat Ballou", Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in "It Happened One Night, Audrey Hepburn in "Roman Holiday", among others. It happens more frequently in the supporting actors and actresses categories.
