Of course, the year of "My Fair Lady" and "Bells Are Ringing" also featured shows like "The Most Happy Fella", "Li'l Abner" and "Candide" and is pretty much considered at the zenith of the Golden Age. It is that true that "Bells" is dated now because its central premise of an answering service is antiquated technology now, but the film version still is enjoyable as a now kind of historical set piece. Plus, the show produced several standards were very popular at the time and that are still sung. While Julie Andrews became a big star with her Eliza, and the show was a massive success, Judy Holliday was already a big movie star at the time, returning to the stage. Also, she was beloved -- there are stories of people waiting at the stage door to say goodnight to her because she seemed like such a nice, lovely person which came through via her character in the show. I think it took "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound of Music" later on for Andrews to be similarly beloved to add to her being admired. Also, "My Fair Lady" is a comedy like "Bells", just a much more sophisticated one.
