What a great thread this is to read, study and contemplate. So many wonderful lyrics are being cited. I have always loved the lyric for What's The Use of Wonderin' from Carousel for perfectly capturing Julie's character, and the fact that it does not end on an open vowel very much reflects that the subject is closed for her, she will not change her mind. The opening to Hello, Young Lovers is particularly evocative of her entire relationship with her former husband, now a memory in the mists of England. Flower Drum Song's Love Look Away and I am Going to Like it Here are particularly character driven lyrics, and No Way to Stop It not only captures the characters but their moral ambiguity that allowed Hitler to rise to power. All the Things You Are, another wonderful lyric. All Kinds of People perfectly captures Doc's world view. And Show Boat is a marvel for its period with so many memorable lyrics, especially Old Man River, I Still Suits Me (from the film), Can't help Lovin' that Man of Mine, and then there is Sweet Adeline's Why Was I Born ... the list could go on and on. A great thread that has inspired me to pull out the Collected Lyrics book.
