See the Academy Award Winning film musical Cabaret :-). I think they successfully found a way to remove the songs that weren't performned in the context of the cabaret. Although I love the stage version too. I'm having fun with you.
Although they didn't cut as much (only Class?) a similar approach was taken with Chicago, to have the singing be somehow more palatable if seen as fantasy.
I think Kander and Ebb shows lend themselves well to this since they love to work a showbiz metaphor.
I had the exact thought you did about how Day After That might be treated if they decide all the songs are seen as movie musical fantasies.
I hope they just have faith that people will accept all the songs, it's a musical! Who's seen the script?? The people in charge must have already made these decisions :-) |
