That is a *singular* example, and nothing like it has been accomplished successfully before or since. It is the rare musical adaptation that changes so much that it's nearly a different thing entirely, and manages to be just as good as the source, and equally brilliant, equally Cabaret, despite changing so much.

I don't see why all of Valentin's songs can't be forced into the unnecessary "Molina's film fantasies" filter this movie will no doubt use. Not that much needs to be outright cut for that to be applied to the musical. But who can say how creative and inventive they're being about it.

It would be a very big shame to lose the songs that are not part of the obvious film fantasy filter/context. They are integral to the story and the musical that this musical is.

Bill Condon loves musicals, and I have no doubt he loves this one. But... Rob Marshall cut No More. Tim Burton cut 1/3 (at least ) of the Sweeney score to cut the ensemble. Rob Marshall made Nine the movie it became. People who understand and passionately love musicals, and who love the one they're doing as a stage show, and who know how to do movies and musicals and movie musicals... still usually manage to massively f*ck up the musical they're making into a movie, more often than not. And sometimes their approach to it as a movie f*cks it up before they even start rolling.
