Its not the $, its archictects and consultants. The SHED was half a billion, and its an unwelcoming mess - no entrance on the Plaza level near subways, no, one has to wander way way west on 30th Street, and then - well - never mind. Meanwhile, across town, Park Avenue Armory shows what people who care about performance can do. A huge empty Armory Drill Hall. Thats all. With great work and imagination let loose in it. Its actually not THAT hard. The SHED and PERELMAN show what damage inexplicable decisions can cause in a space. You're rebuilding from nothing, Enter on ground level. Nt up steps no matter how beautiful you think they are. Rest rooms on same level as entry to performance space. And comfortable chairs. If you want to REALLY be uncomfortable, go to a great space - ST ANNES WAREHOUSE - and try to sit through a 3 hour show on the chairs I'll be were custom made - with backs perpendicular to the floor. The ARMORY renovation is $215 million. ST ANNES I'm sure was MUCH less than half a billion dollars. But governments and tax abatements throw 100s of millions of dollars at these venues. Sorry. I just don't get it.
