There is also a history of many Best Supporting Actress Oscar winners who, by winning the award relatively young, found it very hard to find properties that would live up to the award-winning performance or be cast in good follow-up roles, at least in film. Ms. DeBose won for a musical, and there aren't that many film musicals being made (more than than '70s, less than the Golden Age), but still not many; she might not be thought of as a dramatic or comedic actress (even though, of course, she was acting in her film). Mira Sorvino, Alicia Vikander, Patricia Arquette, Mercedes Ruehl, Angelica Huston, Melissa Leo, possibly Marisa Tomei (though she does quite a lot of theater) are among others -- who won for dramas or comedies -- whose Oscar win possibly stunted their movie careers to some extent. | |
