Chromie, my initial working list is over one hundred and fifty shows, many of them from comics little remembered today. Most from 1894-1930 didn’t play Broadway (or played a very brief engagement); they were huge, though, in regional theatre. The more successful producers worked up new versions to keep the cash rolling, like MUTT AND JEFF IN THE WOOLY WEST, THE KATZENJAMMER KIDS IN PALM BEACH, and BRINGING UP FATHER IN IRELAND. Today’s research was on PALMER COX’S BROWNIES (1894), whose creator (Cox) wrote the libretto and lyrics, and technically, it fits this thread, since he and composer Malcolm Douglas first wrote a two act cantata, to be used for schools and Sunday schools. Then they wrote a three act spectacular, produced by Klaw and Erlanger, with over 100 cast members. (And a sea serpent, dragons, a volcano, an aerial fairy ballet, and a bird swooping to take one of the brownies away—he returned unharmed. But I digress, as usual. Laura in LA |
