in 1925 Sigmund Romberg wrote a musical based on Prisoner of Zenda titled Princess Flavia. A year earlier, Rodgers and Hart with Fields had written an amateur musical of Prisoner of Zenda. In 1963 Vernon Duke with Evertt Freeman, Martin Charnin, Sid Fuller and Lenny Adelson wrote an out of town "updated" musical vehicle for Alfred Drake, Chita Rivera and Anne Rogers called Zenda that played successfully on the West Coast, but never came in to Broadway. The movie Dave is a modernization of the Zenda story, and a musical version did a tryout several Yeats ago but never transferred to Broadway. |
