Scalpers buy tickets?

I agree with all of your statements and I basically support all of them in the best interests of the producers who are trying to make a financial success of their shows -- except for the statement about scalpers.'

When I looked at the data on this performance of Maybe Happy Ending, the SeatGeek information puzzled me. I assume that SeatGeek acts in some capacity as a "scalper." It buys tickets via the official box office at posted retail prices in advance of performance -- seemingly FAR in advance of performance because the seats SeatGeek was selling at inflated prices were NEVER available to the retail ticket buyer if they wanted to use the show's official ticket-buying outlet, TeleCharge. In other words, I assume that SeatGeek buys the tickets, with a no return/no exchange provision as all retail ticket buyers must adhere to, knowing the risks of charging a premium in the HOPE of selling them before curtain time.

But looking at the availability of retail tickets on the day of performance, I saw very few tickets available via the TeleCharge site, but tons of tickets (at inflated prices above the stated retail price as posted at the theatre's box office) on SeatGeek. (I should have also looked at what was offered at StubHub, but I didn't.) Yet, despite so few seats available via TeleCharge, the show was on TKTS from the moment the booth opened until curtain time (when I bought my last-minute seats at a greatly reduced price). When I got to the theatre, every single on of those SeatGeek seats were occupied. My question is: Is SeatGeek REALLY buying all those seats in advance and taking them out of the box office (TeleCharge) inventory? Or is there a different kind of arrangement here with SeatGeek handling the tickets in cooperation with the box office, but at much, much higher prices. But with the added ability to hand unsold price-inflated tickets BACK to the box office on performance date so that they can be channeled into the TKTS system?

I simply cannot believe that SeatGeek was able to sell every single one of those many price-inflated tickets that they had at 3pm and 5pm on performance date WITHOUT somehow getting them over to TKTS. What is the relationship of SeatGeek to the box office (or TeleCharge)? Is the theatre getting a cut on the inflated prices for as long as possible before taking them back to send over to TKTS? Is the box office artificially holding back on legitimate full-priced retail tickets from TeleCharge in the hopes of getting even more via SeatGeek and thereby denying full-price ticket buyers the opportunity to buy at the stated retail price? And, if so, is this legal?
