Just because lyrics are opaque doesn’t mean they’re bad. It’s obviously a song about survival in NYC no matter who you are, man, woman, somebody’s mother, somebody’s brother. It is open to interpretation. Whereas the winner that year- You Light Up My Life is a fairly treacly sentiment. A good long lasting so g has an emotional pull. Not to mention how brilliantly it functions within the film. I clearly remember seeing Travolta striding down the street with that incredible pulsing beat It was immediately clear that the song, actor and movie were perfectly fitted.
