Just like Shakespeare who featured lots of cross-dressing in plays like "Cymbeline," "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "As You Like It," the world of opera includes a convention known as "trouser roles" where mezzo-sopranos don male drag to often play characters who are male teenagers or boys. You can find it in such operas like Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," "Idomeneo" and "La Clemenza di Tito," Humperdinck's "Hansel & Gretel," and in "Der Rosenkavalier" and "Ariadne auf Naxos" by Richard Strauss. Just last year, Washington National Opera staged Beethoven's "Fidelio" at the Kennedy Center. The opera has a heroine named Leonore who dons male drag as the prison guard Fidelio to infiltrate a corrupt jail in order to rescue her political prisoner husband, Florestan. If these are the examples of "drag" that are outraging Republicans, then they should be more up front about trying to censor theatrical and operatic masterpieces of Western Civilization. |
