I have to admit that for me the Kennedy Center Honors have lost their primacy of place in the last 20 years. I loved the way that, when I was a child, they opened my eyes to more rarified worlds like opera (Marian Anderson), ballet (George Balanchine), modern dance (Martha Graham), jazz (Ella Fitzgerald), classical music (Arthur Rubenstein) and of course theatre (Mary Martin). Because they had more than a half-century worth of great artists to honour, those early years really were filled with towering figures in their fields, legends all. It felt like the inclusion of great film (and later television) stars was a nod to inclusivity. And of course the vast majority had either retired or were past their most productive years (artistically speaking) so there was great sense of it being a valedictory celebration. I just don't feel the same thrill seeing people like Queen Latifah, Lorne Michaels, Gloria Estefan or the weird inclusion of institutions like Sesame Street, Hamilton or the Apollo Theatre. And I can imagine that, regardless of who is running the place, that we will eventually have podcasters and TikTokkers and influencers being honoured and that the Hawk Tuah Girl will be sitting up in the dress circle next to the President gazing down on her adoring fans. I'm reminded of the great W.S. Gilbert lyric from The Gondoliers: "When everyone is somebody then no-one's anybody." |
