I think you hit it on the head right there. If Lincoln Center had come calling and offered to give it the full SOUTH PACIFIC treatment, that would have happened.
Assuming that no one involved needed the money badly, they probably care more about how the artistic integrity of the work. It's unfortunate that the Roundabout has acquired this reputation (and I've really enjoyed a lot of their productions), but I can't imagine that they don't get pushback from composers about how the shows sounds. It must be hard for composers to have to choose between a major Broadway revival of their work and hearing it presented the way they want it presented in a major production. |
