''Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story'' is a wonderful and inspiring saga of how he became the quintessential Man of Steel on the big screen and his heroic efforts to champion for disabled rights after the tragic riding accident that left him paralyzed. Alas, it doesn't spend much time on his stage career, but it includes the funny-sad story about his literary-minded father's reaction to him being in ''Superman.'' Reeve's dad was so excited by the news ... until he found out his son was playing a comic-book hero, and not starring in a revival of George Bernard Shaw's ''Man and Superman.'' ''Super/Man'' was directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, who co-wrote the script with Otto Burnham. It's received a 98% approval rating from critics and audiences at Rotten Tomatoes. It won the Best Documentary Feature prize from the Critics' Choice Awards, and has been nominated by the Producers Guild of America. Sadly, the Academy tends to look down on celebrity-focused films, so it was snubbed and left off the Oscar shortlist. As for whether Reeve was a ''limited'' actor, that's a subjective call. His iconic film portrayal of Superman, which earned him a BAFTA Award, looms over his career. But this Juilliard-trained actor, who also did Shakespeare and Stoppard, had various stage credits. He played on Broadway and Off-Broadway, alongside Katharine Hepburn, Jeff Daniels and William Hurt. Plus, he did a number of new plays and classics at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. John Houseman, the legendary acting teacher and Oscar-winning actor, told Reeve: ''It is terribly important that you become a serious classical actor. Unless, of course, they offer you a shitload of money to do something else.'' Reeve could play more than Superman, but he also was not a snob about it: He called the Man of Steel ''the closest opportunity I've had to play a classical role on film'' and cited his character's ''mythic dimension.'' As for whether Reeve was ''limited'' as a father, that's a judgment perhaps best left to his children. All grown up, Matthew is a writer, director and producer; Alexandra is a lawyer, and Will is a TV journalist. They also appear to be bright and articulate, and have carried on their dad's advocacy work as board members of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. They're seen in ''Super/Man,'' too, and have proudly promoted the movie. |
