Gotta completely disagree. First time I've ever actually believed the wizard was a carnival conman. As much as I love Joel Grey and he will forever be broadway royalty - I've never understood (other than we need a big name) the way the Wizard has traditionally been characterized on stage. (With the disclaimer I've only seen a few actors play the wizard). Glodblum has that smarmy edge that I often find lacking (which isn't helped by what I assume were songs written specifically to give Robert Morse/Joel Grey some singing but which I think are the weakest in the score. |
