Pete Hammond in Deadline.com writes: ''To pull this off, Condon had to jettison some of the show’s songs, mostly those in prison, but the loss is more than made up for — and in fact enhanced — by the dazzling movie musical on view with some 11 production numbers...'' ''Condon had to jettison SOME of the show's songs''? From the reviews and feature stories I've read, it sounds like Condon jettisoned MANY of the show's songs. Kander & Ebb wrote about 2 dozen tunes for the Tony-winning stage show, so if 11 remain in the movie, that means about half of the score is gone. I'm still excited to see it, but I imagine I'll miss numbers like ''Dressing Them Up.'' Below, IndieWire's critic is dressing it down with a grade of C+. |
