dramedy, when you say that you've never actually met a star, you may have and not realized it! It sounds like you don't do the stage door thing or go to talkbacks, but stars (depending on your definition of star) are not that uncommon in New York theater audiences. Although again, that depends on your definition of star -- sometimes, there's a stir in the audience that there's a celebrity in the house, and when I hear the name, I have no idea who that is. Some YouTuber or something like that. I usually go to the theater by myself, so I often make small talk with my seat mates or if I'm in a long line (like the box office line, or the restroom line at intermission). A few times, that person has been someone whose name I recognize (even if I don't realize who they are at first). From my limited experience, people who are rarely recognized seem to be quite flattered that you know their work, although you kind of have to gauge their reaction. If I ever sat next to someone who was a well-known name, I wouldn't want to be the hundredth person that day to tell them I'm a fan and probably wouldn't initiate any conversation with them, but I don't think I've ever had a seat mate or line mate who's known to the general public. People who are at that level of fame probably aren't waiting in line with the rest of us, anyway. It probably ups the celebrity quotient that I typically try to see a show pretty close to opening. If you're coming from California and seeing the show months later, there are probably fewer stars in the audience. One encounter I remember well was that I sat next to Jesse Tyler Ferguson at some show shortly after Spelling Bee, and it sounded like he had nothing lined up and wasn't sure what his next gig was going to be. About a year later, Modern Family premiered, and the rest is history... |
