The film of CHICAGO cut six songs from the stage score: "A Little Bit of Good," "My Own Best Friend," "I Know a Girl," "Me and My Baby," "When Velma Takes the Stand," and "Class." If the film of KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN restricts all the songs to a movie starring Aurora, it could lose as many as 13 songs, unless some are repurposed as movie songs (Molina's reality does sometimes intermingle with the films). What is interesting is that Condon has made it a single film, rather than bits of multiple films. This is the approach that McNally, Kander, Ebb, and Prince originally took when the show tried out as part of New Musicals in Purchase, NY. It proved too confusing for audiences to follow two plots simultaneously, which is why they changed it to pieces of multiple films, with each piece commenting in some way on the main story of the two men in prison. Perhaps if there is no music in the prison cell story, the thought is that following two plots won't be so confusing. Or perhaps the plot of the musical film won't matter much. Or maybe following two plots will be easier on film. We'll see soon enough. | |
