A close friend who is a set designer was David Mitchell's assistant on that show and several others. The sets may have looked nice, but my friend felt that the house set hurt the show. The show is about a poor, struggling family, and the house was huge. The show was originally booked for the Broadway, but when Ballroom closed, it was switched to the more desirable Majestic. Both are big theatres, and it was probably felt that a big house for the family was therefore needed, but my friend thought it hurt the show. Not that the show was good. It would have flopped in any case, but it should have played a more intimate theatre than either the Majestic or the Broadway. |
