First, apologies for me mistyping "If They Could See Her" when I meant "If YOU Could See Her." And, yes, I know, Joel occasionally sang the original lyric. But every time I saw it, including with Joel's replacements, it was "She isn't a meeskite at all." I saw Joel twice in the original, two replacement emcees on Broadway, one in the national tour, and one in the Judy Carne version at Westbury. That's also true on the original cast album. Though on the original London cast album, it's "She Doesn't Look Jewish at All." And—I may be wrong but—the distorted mirror was also to suggest a kind of George Grosz perspective of the audience.
