Michael - thank you for this post. One slight correction/addition, and something that Joel Grey recently confirmed. Even after the lyric was changed to "she isn't a meeskite at all," he continued to sing the original lyric occasionally, claiming that in the moment, he "forgot" the change. He clearly knew how important that original lyric was in context.

Also, a dearly departed director friend of mine who also saw the original production used to talk about the original mirror set and the fact that, just as in the movie, it was a warped mirror - so that the reflection you saw back was distorted. I think that's also an important point.

I agree 100% about that exchange in the party scene. Thank you for mentioning your personal reaction to it.
