Though it's also interesting that the "Cabaret Boys" (Bobby, Victor, etc) didn't get introduced as such in the 1966 version of the show - just the girls ("each and every one a virgin" etc). The script for the 80's revival has the moment with the boys included, though I don't know if that was added for London first, before NYC. But yes, it was clear to me even around 11 or 12 when I first saw the film on TV (somewhat modified for network showing - I think ABC), and not knowing that much about the stage show yet, that the MC probably "didn't care much" for the girls. I was just at the point in my own life when I was realizing the same lol. Barry (aka Barré) Dennen by this point had already had been in a relationship with Streisand, who was not "singing happy" when she found out he liked guys too. |
