The Master of Ceremonies sang about screwing two ladies, which is not the same as the character actually having been doing that. In reviews of the original production, these are some of the words that critics used in reference to the Master of Ceremonies: homosexual, androgynous, effeminate, effete and mincing. And it wasn't just Joel Grey. When Martin Ross replaced Grey, the second-string Variety critic in reviewing the then-current cast wrote, "Martin Ross continues to swishbuckle stylishly as the serpentine m.c." And Variety's London critic wrote that Barry Dennen in London was "brilliant as the epicene, cynical homosexual, striking the right note for the cabaret sequences.” |
