It was crazy that he insisted on not going to the hospital until he had played opening night, but it seems that is what happened. According to Peter Hunt in fassler.com's book Up in the Cheap Seats, Da Silva's heart attack occurred on the Thursday afternoon before opening. If his memory was correct, that means Da Silva waited three-and-a-half days before going to the hospital, performing five performances before he did so. As mentioned by fassler.com below, Ken Howard left to make Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon. I didn't know about the three-picture contract. Such Good Friends did not start filming till some time in 1971 so that was well after he left the show. In fact, not till after he had done Child's Play and won a Tony for it. The press was told that he would return to 1776, but he never did. Preminger made so few films after that, and Howard did not appear in any of them. Meanwhile, and perhaps most important, I have to correct myself: I wrote in this thread and I have written here several times in the past that Da Silva did not return till June. I based this on a surmise from an article in the press in June 1969, but I should know better than to state surmises as fact, and maybe I will in future be more careful about doing so. According to a column in the Daily News, he returned on April 14. So there was another seven weeks during which the full original cast remained in the show. |
