Ken Howard signed a film contract for 3 movies with Otto Preminger right after opening night. Peter Stone, "1776's" author, brought Preminger to opening night and Ken was called to his office the very next day where Preminger offered him the deal. The first film was "Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon," with Liza Minnelli, and the second was "Such Good Friends." Ken's agent finessed it so he could get out of the third picture. As for Clifford David, from all I've ever heard, he was unhappy and wanted out and was replaced with David Cryer. The third Rutledge, John Cullum, was so good in the part (and had actually turned it down originally) that he got to recreate the role in the 1972 film.
