I don't think there's even a conceivable chance that "Pirates! The Penzance Musical" won't be ruled a revival. The only possible thing is that, like other revivals with rewritten books, the book could become eligible. It doesn't matter that they messed around with the title (god knows why, the new title is terrible and doesn't make much sense as a title or for marketing). I think the only way a thing like this could be ruled a New Musical but with an ineligible score is if the score from an existing musical (like Pirates of Penzance) were taken and repurposed in an entirely new story with new characters in a different plot. I don't think that's ever happened, has it? I mean I don't think a show that does that exists, right? |
