A sincere attempt to deconstruct SHOW BOAT, but it doesn’t go far enough. SHOW/BOAT: A RIVER takes the original show apart—and not. What’s on stage here is a version of the original that seems governed by an aversion to it. This SHOW BOAT wants it both ways in the most literal sense. It wants the benefit of two opposing options simultaneously: to play SHOW BOAT as written and amend it at the same time. So there’s no discernible point of view (the muddled, reconfigured title suggests as much) and the show toggles, and often drags, between the familiar SHOW BOAT and the uncertain SHOW/BOAT: A RIVER. There’s some notable vocal talent on display here (Philip Themio Stoddard and Alvin Crawford as Ravenal and Joe respectively) and everyone’s playing eagerly on the same two pages. But in the end—and to start—SHOW/BOAT: A RIVER is just one page too many, neither recognizably itself nor persuasively something else.
