I’m not saying “Mary Jane” was a right or wrong decision. I’m not saying “Eureka Day” is a right or wrong decision. I’m not an advocate for the committee’s decisions in any way.

I’m just pointing out what I see to be the pattern in the decisions (not just with those two plays), and a common director tends to lend to the position that a play is still the original production, hence a new play.

I highly imagine that “English” will be considered a new play, even through it won the Pulitzer three years ago and has been seen in many regional stagings, because its original director (and cast, in this instance) are the same. But even if it had recast but the director was the same, I think that would be the outcome. It’s the “same production” moving to Broadway. “Eureka Day” doesn’t feel that way at all. It’s a completely new production years later by a new director. That sounds a lot like a revival.

Again, it’s about how these things feel. Nothing is perfect, and they have to make decisions somehow.
