By the time of "Terrible Joe Moran," James Cagney had suffered a stroke and could no longer speak clearly. His dialogue was dubbed by Rich Little.

His role in "Ragtime" was originally intended for Jack Nicholson, who became unavailable (perhaps because of the long "Reds" shoot?). Cagney was already using a wheelchair, so whenever his character is seen walking it is actually a photo double, filmed from behind.
