As we were leaving and exiting the rows yesterday matinee, I overheard an elderly couple in front of me: man asked woman, "So what did you think?" With a look of perplexity on her face, the woman replied, "I...thought it was...weird" I was dying to hear the rest of it but they had moved on. I was baffled -- I'm sure this play can spark quite a few reactions but "weirdness" was not one I would have guessed. It left me wondering - is it remotely possible she didn't understand that the characters were both speaking English and Farsi, but by altering their accents? Perhaps she had a hard time hearing the difference in accents? Is this possible that was her erroneous take??? It might sound strange to people that I'm so invested in what this woman thought of the show but I am absurdly affected by audience member reactions to shows. Normal people tear up at the homeless pets commercials by Sarah Maclachlan...I get very upset when people don't "get" a show. SPOILER************* Speaking of not understanding something - does anyone have the translation for the Farsi bit at the end? I understand the trick the playwright is employing by having them switch to Farsi at the end -- perhaps what was said wasn't even important and it's sole purpose is to put us in a perspective where we finally don't understand them. But still, that conversation seemed to have a lot of weight behind it and I'm dying to know what was said. |
