I think it's because big theatrical singing looks like terribly overdone acting when placed in front of a camera. For a movie musical to work, it must embrace the world of musical theatre, but also remember that a camera is a lot closer to a performer than an audience member, and as audience members we ARE the camera, in a sense.
The more subdued, passive vocals and delivery, for me, were perfect for that very reason... |
