She was also SO good as the sister in the original A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE at Lincoln Center. She was also an unconventional choice to replace Donna Murphy as Anna in the 1996 KING AND I revival, but I loved what she did there and thought her performance was a revelation. I looked at the character in a whole new way. She brought the comedy, something I think that Gertrude Lawrence must also have done, in a way we don't often see in this role, but also the shades of darkness and pathos and sang it wonderfully. My best guess as to why she never really realized her potential as a star is that after she made her big splash in GUYS AND DOLLS, after years of regional theatre and featured roles in New York, she then didn't immediately then come back in another role in another show that was also a huge success. She tried TV in an unsuccessful sitcom (Hello, Nathan Lane and Kristin Chenoweth), and then the first show she came back to Broadway with was a play that flopped. Then she just never had another big starry role again and went back to the character actress trenches. She used to pop up on TV now and again in guest shots and there was another featured role on a sitcom that went nowhere, but nothing ever happened there. And, as much as I hate to say it, I think people just forgot about her as the years went by. |
