I completely forgot about that, and I enjoyed that production a lot more than most people did.
Okay, she had one more big starry role in a musical and it too flopped.
Compare her trajectory with, say Donna Murphy's...Murphy was also in the featured role/character actress trenches in New York and doing tons of regional theatre and then made her huge splash in PASSION. And then came back two years later in something entirely different as Anna in THE KING AND I and managed, thanks to Julie Andrews' shenanigans, to get herself a second Tony in two years. She was able to propel herself into a musical theatre icon while also popping up fairly regularly in film and TV, currently in Zachary Quinto's BRILLIANT MINDS series on NBC. How was Murphy able to achieve this while Prince was not? I think the building blocks of it all was her quick return in KING AND I and how well that revival was received. |
