The first time I saw Linda Lavin perform was in the (short-lived) national tour of On A Clear Day. It starred Van Johnson. Lavin played Daisy, of course. This was just after she made a big splash in the off-Broadway production of The Mad Show.
The national tour production was dreadful. Van Johnson was dreadful. In over his head. The set was great, however. Lavin was charming. I still remember her delivery of the biggest laugh line of the evening which was given in response to someone asking about her psychiatric problem: "I'm a cigarette case."
She applied that impeccable timing in every role she played. |
