I feel honored to have seen Linda Lavin onstage a number of times—“The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife,” “Death Defying Acts,” “Cakewalk,” “The Lyons.” She was always, always superb.

But two experiences stand out among my history of theatre going. One was her performance as Gorgeous in “The Sisters Rosensweig.” I was new to NYC, and she had replaced Madeline Kahn. I remember loving her so much I wanted to run down and hug her at the curtain call. She was such a joy.

Another moment I will never forget was the final scene in “The Diary of Anne Frank,” where the people are brought down the stairs after having been discovered in the attic. She made such a strong choice, and it sends chills up my spine remembering it now. She made the entire walk down the stairs with her jaw locked in a fully open position, a mask of terror. This woman whose comedic gifts were so abundant could also freeze your blood. It was many years later that I visited Amsterdam for the first time and went to the Anne Frank House. I stood on those very stairs and remembered how I’d felt seeing Linda Lavin being brought down them.

I don’t usually comment on RIP threads, even for people whose contributions I greatly appreciated. But Linda Lavin has been one of the most special gifts of my theatre going life. I feel so lucky to have seen plays while she was performing onstage. She was a treasure, and I’m very sad she’s gone. God bless.
