Sorry - let me clarify. Sure, we can say that the literal dancing in the dream ballet is not quite the end of the act. But as I said, the music keeps going and the final moments of the act are fully underscored, as if it is still part of one sequence of action. The 10 bars of ending music as written (where Laurie wakes up, etc) is still part of "#17d - Dream Ballet" in the score. It's marked "coda" and it's the last climactic phrase of "People Will Say We're In Love," which feels in every logical and emotional way like the end of the musical piece proper, unlike the unresolved part of the music where the dancing itself would finish (the end of the "Surrey" section), which leads without question to that coda. If one were playing the "Oklahoma Dream Ballet" as part of a orchestral concert performance, or even presenting it as as an isolated dance in a ballet program, you would absolutely need to include those last ten bars of "coda" music - even if the physical moment with Laurie, Jud, and Curly wasn't staged. It's part of the music and part of the scenario. And again, it's not just the fact that the music continues, but that it feels like the obvious and clear final statement of the musical sequence, instead of an afterthought. ("Hey, Dick - can you give us some extra music to cover that final bit of the act?" That's not how we hear that music. If you really listen to it, you won't either.) So, for intents and purposes, the sequence that includes the literal ballet does continue to the end of the act. That's how the score presents it. You can choose to say the ballet proper ends 10 bars before the act does, but the music continues on AS ONE to finish the sequence, which does not end musically with the end of the dancing. You simply don't have the complete ballet sequence without that 10-bar coda, which provides the essential cadential cap on the whole ballet composition. Thank you much. |
